Il brano di apertura di Paris 1919, il disco capolavoro di John Cale, è sicuramente un modello piuttosto alto con cui cimentarsi. Se aggiungiamo a questo il fatto che Cale è in pratica il mio eroe musicale, con cui condivido la formazione classica e una fascinazione per il rock più immediato, ne viene fuori il tipico brano che sarebbe meglio lasciar stare.
Eppure alla fine lo abbiamo inserito in scaletta, e sono ormai più di dieci anni che lo proponiamo dal vivo con risultati non disprezzabili (almeno a sentire il pubblico), per cui non poteva rimanere fuori da questo album.
Per chi volesse sapere qualcosa di più sull’argomento della canzone, si tratta di una sorta di caleidoscopio di ricordi di gioventù e suggestioni varie, sulla scorta dell’omonimo racconto breve di Dylan Thomas, al quale il brano è vagamente ispirato. Ovviamente sia Thomas che Cale sono gallesi, quindi il terreno della “remembrance” è lo stesso.
