Greensleeves è una delle più antiche canzoni inglesi, di incerta attribuzione.
La tesi più accreditata è che l’autore sia il liutista del XVI secolo Francis Cutting, ma una parte minore della critica la attribuisce addirittura a Enrico VIII, che l’avrebbe composta per la sua amante e futura consorte Anna Bolena. È infatti risaputo che oltre ad essere un mecenate delle arti, fosse egli stesso un musicista di un certo talento.
La protagonista della canzone è una donna promiscua (l’aggettivo “verde” aveva al tempo questa accezione), che rifiuta l’onesta proposta di un giovane innamorato.
La tematica profana e “stradaiola” fece sì che il brano venisse incluso nella Beggar’s Opera di John Gay (1728). In questa composizione, nata da un suggerimento dell’amico Jonathan Swift, John Gay si faceva beffe della mania dell’aristocrazia inglese dell’epoca per l’opera italiana, scegliendo come protagonisti del libretto ladri e donne di malaffare, in una sorta di contrappasso sarcastico.
Nel 1928 Bertold Brecht e Kurt Weill riadattarono la composizione chiamandola “Dreigroschenoper”.
Il testo natalizio ottocentesco “What child is this?”, sovrapposto da William Chatterton Dix è stato da noi ritenuto inferiore qualitativamente al testo della musica originale. Abbiamo pertanto scelto di riproporlo qui in quest’ultima versione.
