Il testo di questa carola tradizionale è opera del poeta Charles Wesley, fratello di John Wesley, fondatore della Chiesa Metodista.

Scritta originalmente nel 1739, la canzone era inizialmente associata ad una melodia lenta e severa, come prescriveva il gusto del suo autore, ma negli anni finì per combinarsi con la melodia della cantata “Festgesang an die Künstler”, composta da Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy nel 1840 per commemorare l’invenzione della stampa da parte di Johannes Gutenberg.
Il mash-up fu opera del compositore inglese William H. Cummings, che adattò la composizione di Mendelssohn alle parole di Wesley.

Qui abbiamo voluto proporla in una versione molto semplice, in forma di ninna nanna, rinunciando ai barocchismi della versione originale e all’arrangiamento corale in favore di una vocalità più diretta.
