Questa canzone di Natale fu scritta nel 1934 da J. Fred Coots e Haven Gillespie, e divenne un successo immediato. Canzoni come questa hanno contribuito a diffondere la moderna mitologia della figura di Babbo Natale, codificata in America alla fine del XIX secolo soprattutto grazie all’opera del cartoonist Thomas Nast. Le origini della figura sono molto più antiche, da rintracciare nella figura di Odino, re degli dèi nel pantheon nordico. Odino era infatti raffigurato come un vecchio dalla barba bianca, con cappuccio e mantello, e durante le celebrazioni di Yule, si pensava volasse nel cielo a cavallo del suo destriero Sleipnir. Particolare curioso è che le zampe di Sleipnir erano otto come le renne nella successiva elaborazione del mito.
Altre influenze sull’odierna iconografia sono una allegoria del Natale creata dal poeta Ben Jonson nel XVII secolo, ai tempi del dibattito fra cattolici e protestanti sulla cancellazione della festività del Natale, e più recentemente la figura di San Nicola di Myra (o di Bari, dove furono poi traslate le sue spoglie), nell’ambito di una delle molte operazioni di sincretismo portate avanti dal cristianesimo per sovrapporre i propri santi alle divinità pagane.
