La prima carola natalizia americana a diventare famosa, e ad entrare a pieno diritto nel repertorio tradizionale ottocentesco, è opera del reverendo John Henry Hopkins Jr. nel 1857. L’occasione fu una recita natalizia tenutasi al Seminario di Teologia Generale di New York City, dove Hopkins era insegnante di musica. Da notare che contrariamente alla maggior parte delle altre carole, delle quali solo il testo venne scritto nell’Ottocento in giustapposizione a musiche preesistenti, in questo caso l’autore scrisse sia le parole che la musica.
Questa famosa composizione fu l’ultimo contributo del reverendo Hopkins al seminario, infatti dall’anno successivo si spostò a Williamsport, Pennsylvania, dove divenne rettore della Chiesa Episcopale di Cristo, che ha sede in uno dei più belli edifici religiosi in stile neogotico degli Stati Uniti.
